There used to be no smiling in photographs,
no plastered grins like those captured today.
But it seems the hardened stares of my ancestors
contain the realness of every passing day.

I picture a woman,
who loves me again.
I picture a place
from a treasured old when.
I picture a cause
my dull passion embraces.
I picture fresh ideas,
fresh language, fresh faces.
I picture a smile
unintended, automatic.
I picture pairs of eyes
expressive and ecstatic.
I picture the cure
for life long aching.
I picture the pictures
that I long to be taking.

Is paltry and reserved.
While human lenses,
Greater wonders have observed.
