A mislaid word
Is to prose
Like an errant stroke of paint
On Mona Lisa’s nose.

Ball rolling quickly
Bounce, bounce, kick it flies in air,
Caught and I am out.

It was something
In the way you blinked your eyes
Or contorted your face
Or moved your lips
Something in how
Your voice fluctuated
On the phone
When you set up the time
It had to do
With that time when your phone
Shattered on the ground
Made you swear
This or that
Every reason together or none at all
Is why
You’re still waiting
One look or listen
The assumptions started falling
Involuntary verdicts
Over everything you are

Sitting there with your phony smile
Knowing the joke is on me
Your mouth says I did a good job
But tips speak louder than words
So I will kill you.

I can never dream
in color
but my friend
she always does
Says her dreams are more
like movies
and she watches just because
Sunday mornings
give the future
tuesday’s daydreams mark
the past
Any thing to her is everything
nothing’s ever white and black
