along the grainy beach
the ebb and flow of tide
eased me to soft sleep
in a nearby hotel room I lie

I’ve run across the sand
late late at night
and from this strange land
felt the familiar touch of moonlight

I have fed iguanas flowers
of a color deep and red
they did not shy or cower
but scurried to be fed

I have climbed temple stairs
but you would have to be a madman
to run down them on a dog dare
in a hospital you would land

I’ve spent days helping the needy
their dark eyes
always turn friendly and beady
as their heart grows in size

played along turquoise waters
of the Caribbean sea
met someone’s attractive daughters
who were all too interested in me

yet for all these things
the language escapes my mind
but yet love and friendship sing
from actions so kind

I want to be a
sun-baked old man who
sits underneath the
only umbrella,
nursing a bottle
of ice cold Coca
Cola. I want to
wear a sombrero,
a dirty, faded
poncho, and long, white
whiskers. I want to
see young gringos and
say with a smile,
“Hola, amigos.
Bienvenudos a
nuestro Mexico,”
and hand them a Coke.

and cool hats.

I have never been to Mexico
But it sounds so hot, and spicy.
I hear the peppers make you cry
And the natives there are feisty.
