    Across the street
    a boy walks up to
    the door and knocks.
    He waits, rocking
    back and forth.

    After waiting politely,
    he knocks again.
    He waits a long time,
    much longer than it would
    take anyone to get to
    the door from anywhere
    in such a small house.

    He walks away, still
    reeling from the conversation
    they never had.
