Thousand

A thousand eyes,
Cry two thousand tears.
They weep for the broken,
The lost and forsaken.
A thousand hearts,
Bleed two thousand lives.
They are broken and bleeding,
Living but unused.
A thouand ears,
Listen two thousand times.
They are alert and focused,
To hear the saddening tales.
A thousand lives,
Die two thousand deaths.
They fall for their country,
To save the lives of others.
A thousand graves,
Hold two thousand souls.
They hold the soldier and his honor,
For the rest of eternity.

and I still won’t know it until
you throw away your words
and stop for a moment
and touch my arm
and look into my eyes

And then ten years later when there are
dirty dishes and a crying
baby, and multiplication tables
to be reviewed,
and we have no money,
if I am fighting the wind
