The pen he left on the desk
…had writing on the side.
It could have said,
“Joe’s Cafe – Bad Manners – Good Grub”
It could have said,
“McLeod’s Insurance – No Risks – No Gains”
But instead it said,
“Life is God’s Mystery,
Death, is His magic.”
Now you see it
Now you don’t
The joke is always on me.
I stole the pen.
Laughter bounces all through the room,
jokes and quotes fill up a balloon,
then someone says something quite unrelated.
The balloon filled with so much joy
becomes rather limp and dismally deflated.
Smiles turn down and eyes start to wander,
they search for some way to start anew the banter.
“Have you ever seen
the squirrel that hides
From crazy people?”
I let the question fly.
“Yes.” say most
with a silly giggle
That makes me smile a
nd makes me wiggle.
But my poor friend
who’s initial is L,
Answered a “No!”
as her countenance fell.
I am ill more often than well
worried have become my folks
but I feel rather swell
and from this deathbed come life giving jokes
I may pass on tonight or tomorrow
but I would still find a way
to ease others’ sorrow
like the sun brightening the dark day
some might glimpse a sight of me
in laughter and smiles
and find themselves chuckling “haha hehe”
for a moment forgetting their trials
Others may find me soaring upon wind’s sails
a rush of excitement, adventure, fanning their ears
new hope and growth despite past fails
laughter and sunshine replacing cold tears
Still many shall know me as an inner light
warming their blood and bones
expanding their sight
whispering gently “you’re not alone.”

When I feel down
about my sense of humor
I remind myself
that all bad puns
need a home

When the milk tipped and spilled,
your eyes filled with smoke.
But days from now you’ll sit among friends,
and tell it like a joke.

Here’s a joke, I hope you laugh;
heaven knows you need it.
Now let’s split your pain and each take half;
together we can beat it.
